애플 - FBI의 아이폰 백도어 제공 요청을 거부

미국 캘리포이나 법원은 애플이 San Bernadino에서 발생한 총기 난사범중 한명이 보유하였던 아이폰5c의 보안을 해제하는 것에 대해 FBI와 협조하라는 명령을 내렸으나 이에 대해 '소비자에게 보내는 메시지'라는 공개서한을 통해 공식적으로 거부하였습니다.

그동안 FBI는 아이폰에서 10회 암호를 틀렸을때 암호를 삭제하는 기능인 '활성화 잠금장치(Activation Lock)'을 우회할 수 있도록 하는 것과 직접 입력이 아닌 전자적인 방법으로 '부르트 포스' 공격을 할 수 있는 백도어를 제공할 것을 요청한 상태입니다.

하지만, 팀쿡은 공개 서한을 통해  해당 사건이 비극적이며, 조사 과정에서 FBI에 가능한 범위 내에서의 협조를 해 왔다는 것을 우선 밝히며, 이러한 FBI의 요구를 받아들이는 것은 향후 백도어를 개발하도록 명령하는등의 위험한 선례를 남기는 것으로 법원의 명령 거부가 쉽지 않은 결정이지만 공식적으로 거부하기로 결정했다고 알렸습니다.

The government is asking Apple to hack our own users and undermine decades of security advancements that protect our customers — including tens of millions of American citizens — from sophisticated hackers and cybercriminals. The same engineers who built strong encryption into the iPhone to protect our users would, ironically, be ordered to weaken those protections and make our users less safe.

We can find no precedent for an American company being forced to expose its customers to a greater risk of attack. For years, cryptologists and national security experts have been warning against weakening encryption. Doing so would hurt only the well-meaning and law-abiding citizens who rely on companies like Apple to protect their data.
